At book 9 in the series, we’re all getting to know Alex Verus pretty well. As usual, he’s stuck right in the middle of all the drama, with any number of people out to kill him and more than his fair share of bad days. While Morden’s cooling his heels in prison awaiting trial, Alex has taken over the Dark Mage seat on the Junior Council, giving him a chance at gaining influence right at the top of Mage society. It’s not that easy, of course, at least three of the seven Senior Councillors flat out ...more

I think the Alex Verus books are really like the shows you put on backburner as you do other stuff. An almost filler if you will. Books 7 and 8 in the series really shook up the series and kind of forced it to show some kind of (for the lack of a better word) ambition and a sense of end game. Book 9 is back to the one step forward, 3 steps sidewards narrative. I mean on the whole, its a good piece of entertainment and I fairly breezed through it but I still keep wondering what more, what else.

Alex still occupies Morden's place on the Junior Council, and he has been leading teams to get back the imbued items that have been stolen from the Vault. Council is trying to catch Richard Drakh, making deal with Morden, and of course things don't go as plan. As usual Alex and his friends are smack dab in the middle of everything.

It's always easy to return to Alex Verus' world, despite my not remembering the details that happened in the previous books. Which, in my humble opinion, is a testamen

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I started reading this book before I realized it is book 9 in the Alex Verus book series by the author. I haven't read any other books in this series, but was still able to follow the storyline and enjoy the book. This was a very good urban fantasy book. It kept my attention and makes me want to go back and read the first books in the series.

This world has a lot of magical people. They are governed by a

As much as I enjoy this series, I feel like it's getting too dark all the time. Maybe it's just me, but I think that I'm falling out of love with this series.

We are at the point in a series when I’m always reluctant to start a new book because I’m waiting for the series to start to go downhill. That, thankfully, isn’t happening in this series. Alex is in the middle of trying to recapture items of power, all the while people still want him dead. Admittedly, it’s a little harder since he’s is in a better position (see previous book) than ever before, but Richard is still trying to seize control, and Alex and the Council don’t agree on how to do it. But ...more

2.5* maybe.

Very meh, nothing new happened, largely seemed like a rehash of previous books and action sequences. Disappointing!:(

Great as always but the battle at the ending was lacking.
